Humus Labs Early-Career Research Program
The Humus Labs Early-Career Research Program is a remote research apprenticeship for final-year undergraduate students and recent graduates interested in AI-related research. Applications for the current cycle are now closed.
The program supports individuals who want to learn how rigorous research is conducted and to contribute meaningfully to ongoing projects in human-centered AI, data, and emerging technologies.
Program Overview
Participants will:
- Work with Humus Labs researchers on active research projects
- Pursue a self-defined research interest aligned with the lab's mission
- Receive structured feedback and mentorship
- Contribute to written research outputs such as reports, papers, and public research artifacts
This program prioritizes research thinking and learning, not prior publications or prestige.
Eligibility
We welcome applications from:
- Final-year undergraduate students and recent graduates in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related fields
- Applicants from any country or region
Applicants should demonstrate:
- Interest in AI, data, or emerging technologies
- Curiosity about technical, social, or institutional questions
- Ability to commit consistent time to research work
A First Class or Second Class Upper degree or its equivalent is preferred.
Research Areas
Applicants may propose interests related to:
- Human-centered AI and responsible AI evaluation
- AI systems, trust, and explainability
- AI governance and policy
- AI in low-resource or non-dominant contexts
- Data practices and societal impact
- Qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods research
Application Materials
Applicants are required to submit:
1. Statement of Interest (300–400 words)
2. Short Research Proposal (maximum 2 pages, PDF)
Outlining:
- A research question or area of interest
- Why the topic matters
- A high-level idea of how it could be studied
- Alignment with Humus Labs' mission
The proposal is used to assess clarity of thinking and research potential, not completeness.
3. Sample of Prior Work (optional but encouraged)
Examples include:
- Final-year project
- GitHub repository
- Research write-up
- Essay or blog post
4. CV or Résumé
Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed based on:
- Thoughtfulness of the research proposal
- Alignment with the lab's research focus
- Evidence of curiosity, care, and commitment
Shortlisted candidates may be invited for a brief interview.
Compensation
This is an unpaid research program. However, stipends are available for selected participants, subject to funding.
